Having recorded under a series of names such as Loony, Loonz and Lil Tracey, he settled on AJ Tracey when he started to make waves on pirate radio stations as part of his Team Got Paid collective in 2015.
![]() ![]() Aj Tracey Album Series Of NamesHe then appeared on Link Up TV where he performed an amazing freestyletrack titled Packages which put loads of people onto him. He slowly started rising to fame, collaborated with fellow UK rapper Dave, and got placed in the category of the next generation of the Hip-Hop scene in UK. His Secure the Bag EP had features from bigger name rappers such as JME and Denzel Curry, which then led a more international audience to notice Tracey. Just to get it out of the way right now this album is rather bad. Its a blatant attempt at trying to appeal to the western audience, by not only taking influences from trap and melodic rap thats currently popular in the US, but also ditching the authenticity of his homeland. Tracey uses American slang, approaches topics such as flexing, him (apparently) having shooters, and bad bitches. But thats not all he gives shout outs to US rappers at least on 7 different songs, and it comes out forced as hell. Im a Playboi, shouts Carti is a terrible line, and also sounds like something that was placed in the song with the intention to somehow flex that AJ is cool with popular US rappers I dont see how anyone would care about that honestly. He explores trap, drill, afroswing, melodic trap, and country trap; He doesnt have some sort of quirky personality or cadence, so him attempting at doing all these different sounds just makes the music come out as bland and very surface level. He basically dropped the lyricism that he had, and dumbed it down, just to appeal to current trends. Ladbroke Grove is a standout track, where AJ raps over a UK Garage instrumental, which is reminiscent of a trend in UK Hip-Hop from about less than a decade ago. Then theres also Horror Flick where he for once makes a grime track something hes good at. ![]() AJ TRACEY is a terrible debut, and a perfect example of the drawbacks that come with current Hip-Hop trends influencing UK artists. While rappers such as Skepta and Slowthai manage to give it their own spin and make it interesting, AJ simply copies trends and shows that all he cared about when making this record was popularity and the money. And the terrible one-lines on this make it even worse at time (Imma Playboi shoutout to Carti.). I like AJ tho so Im stop here. Likewise, dont respond to trollish comments; just report them and ignore them.
